Those of you that know me, know that one of my top luscious indulgences is Hot Yoga.  You heard me...luscious (I’m addicted!)  It is also one of the few things that I do that is just for me!  As a single mom of three that leads a crazy fitness forward lifestyle, I always have 20 projects going full throttle with little to no breathing space (though I have been changing that this past year).  Thus, why I hold my hot yoga time as sacred.  But here’s the thing, it’s what I get from my 60-90 minutes of body soaking, heat devouring, slightly cultish practice that keeps bringing me back.  I find a full body exhale, a complete release from all things that are swirling and consuming me.  Not only do I leave with more clarity and focus, but all of my senses are on fire and alert, topped off with an amazing sense of well being and a desire to make positive, engaging choices.  A rejuvenation to my core!

Weight Loss:

Unhealthy cravings be gone!  I truly crave healthy options after a hot yoga session, not only that but I am reinvigorated to tackle some of my personal health goals!

Your digestive system and metabolism will be spurred on.  Hot yoga is known for burning 500 -1000 calories per session.  So as you are building strong, lean muscle you are not only melting that fat away but naturally normalizing your appetite and diminishing unhealthy cravings.

Increased Sex Drive:

Ok, so if you ever want to know what 2 hot yogi’s in a corner are discussing this is it!  Not kidding!  The first or second thing out of one’s mouth that regularly practices hot yoga is....”This is better than sushi!”  Shhhh, don’t tell them I spilled!  It was just too juicy not to share!

The compilation of increased circulation, heightened sensitivity, body awareness, stamina, flexibility, body confidence and release of stress and tension equates to great sex!  Did I just say that outloud?  Indeed!

PS.  Couples who practice yoga together learn how to move and breathe together.  That just sounds sexy, doesn’t it!

Detoxification - Project: Eliminate Cellulite

In this modern world we live in we are inundated by toxins.  From the food we love, the air we inhale, the water that hydrates us to every aspect in between.  We even breed them from the internal stress and tension we place on ourselves.  

These toxins get stored in muscles, tissues, fascia and fat, many times raring up in the form of cellulite.  Sounds a bit gruesome and depressing doesn’t it?  The coolest thing ever...our skin, being the largest organ in our body, is thus one of the perfect channels to escort these unwanted substances out via sweat, sweat and more sweat! (here's where you can start doing your celebration dance)  It’s ok, you can scream “I LOVE HOT YOGA!”  That said...yes you still need to eat well and watch your intake.

Blood Pressure:

Your entire circulatory system is stimulated by this guru of exercise.  Yoga exercises keep the major blood vessels in the body free-flowing and pliable through stretching, it oxygenates the blood and drives all of those great greens you are eating and juicing (just thought I would throw that in as a subliminal hint) to all the peripheral vessels and capillaries.  aka, you have a heart healthy exercise you can fall in love with.

Back Pain:

Let's talk stiff necks, headaches, scoliosis, herniated disks and other back issues that truly affect our ability to completely engage fully in all aspects of life.  Hot yoga prepares the body by warming it and yoga postures work the spine in every direction with beneficial backbends, contributing to a healthy spine and nervous system.  Inform your instructor of the type of pain you have so they can help direct you to appropriate modifications.

Increased Mental Clarity:

Brilliant Mind, Brilliant Body.  A more Brilliant YOU!  As the body is cleansed, the mind is sharpened. Regular practice leads to improved mental clarity, clearing out the fuzzy thinking caused by this modern world’s crazy bombardment of damaging stimuli like pollution, stress, harmful food, etc.

More great news...spending time in forward bending poses allows blood to rush to your cranium which accelerates this mental clarity process.  Soon we will all be smarter than we originally thought!

Reduced Stress:

Have you already tapped your limit on worn out stress balls this year?  Cortisol levels can decrease bringing calmness to your mind and reducing that fight or flight response, equating to a feeling of balanced well-being in its place.  A consistent practice is key here and with that also comes muscle memory.  Learning to take deeper breaths during your practice carries over into your daily grind, automatically producing immediate relief to temporary stressors.

Thyroid Regulation:

For Those of us that have disobedient Thyroids this is fantastic!  I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease when I was pregnant with my daughter.  My Endocrinologist kept telling me....soon we will have to put you on replacement therapy.  I kept telling him, em no you won’t.  Here’s the thing, I believe there are so many natural things we can do to delay or all together heal what we have going on in our bodies.  FINALLY at my last appointment he was like....I don’t understand how you are not yet on therapy!  I attribute it to eating clean (for me that includes my dark chocolate and wine :)), an active and lively lifestyle and exercise regimen, natural herbs, a stubborn German side and a Great God.  This is not to say I will not some day need some support, but I intend to do everything possible now to avoid it if I can.

Let’s bring it back to Yoga shall we?  Many postures work the thyroid by compressing it therefore helping to regulate the gland and balancing thyroid levels.  Chin lock poses work by delivering fresh, oxygenated blood to refill the thyroid once the pose is released which can help to stimulate an underactive glad.

Hormones:  It doesn’t have to be a dirty word!

Hormones are messengers in our body that not only affect our emotions and our mental state, but they tell our physiological system when to do what.  Naturally our bodies were built to rebuild themselves, rejuvenate and rebalance with some cognizant attention.

By utilizing certain yoga poses the pineal, pituitary, parathyroid and thyroid glands, the pancreas, thymus and ovaries can all be aided in coming back into balance.  These poses assist in stimulating and controlling secretion levels from these glands helping to restore health and balance within your body.
